Nutrition Spotlight: Fueling Strength in Later Years Proper nutrition is just as important as exercise for maintaining muscle mass and overall well-being. Here are three key dietary tips for older adults:
- Protein Power – Include lean proteins like fish, eggs, beans, and poultry in your meals. Don’t eat meat? No problem! Try adding nut butters, Greek yogurt, or beans of your choosing!
- Hydration Matters – Drink plenty of water throughout the day to support digestion and joint health. You can also eat some of your daily water by consuming hydrating foods like watermelon, cucumber, or oranges!
- Calcium & Vitamin D – Strengthen bones by incorporating dairy, leafy greens, and fortified foods into your diet.
If you’ve got that down then you can expand your diet to include foods to enhance specific functioning
- Cognitive Functioning: Include foods with antioxidant power and healthy omega-3 fatty acids! These foods include dark leafy greens, wild fish, blueberries and eggs
- Heart Health: Try to incorporate lots of soluble fiber like beans, oats and Brussel sprouts!
- Bowel Health: Make sure to stay hydrated and include high fiber foods such as prunes, whole grains and leafy greens
