Graduate Certificates and Concentrations
The CSU Department of Psychology offers one concentration and two certificates to its graduate students already enrolled in one of the five doctoral programs. Please see the information below to learn more about them.
The CSU Department of Psychology offers a training concentration in Occupational Health Psychology (OHP) to students enrolled in the Ph.D. program. OHP is the application of psychological theories and research methods to protect and promote worker safety, health and well-being. OHP trainees are required to complete additional coursework in occupational health (Occupational Health Psychology, Principles of Ergonomics, and Prevention of Occupational Illnesses and Injuries) beyond the I/O psychology doctoral degree requirements. In addition to their coursework, OHP trainees conduct research in occupational health psychology, participate in multidisciplinary applied occupational health projects, and coordinate, deliver, and attend workshops and colloquia. Each student’s OHP program of study is discussed with and agreed upon by the student’s doctoral committee.
The OHP program is funded by the Mountain & Plains Education and Research Center (ERC), one of only two NIOSH ERCs to support a graduate training program in Occupational Health Psychology (OHP).
Our department is one of just a handful of Psychology departments in the country to offer a graduate certificate in Advanced Quantitative Methods in Psychology. This program will provide students with advanced training in psychometrics, multivariate statistics, structural equation modeling, and other techniques that supplement already required training in hypothesis testing, research design, and regression analysis.
This is a nine-credit certificate currently available only to graduate students in our department. To receive the certificate, you will need to complete at least three of the following courses:
- PSY 600K Advanced Psychology: Measurement
- PSY 750 Quantitative Methods in Psychology Seminar
- PSY 752 Item Response Theory
- PSY 753 Structural Equation Modeling
- PSY 754 Multivariate Analysis in Behavioral Sciences
Substitutions are not allowed as per university policy. Students must also meet the minimum 3.0 GPA requirement and earn a minimum of “C” in the courses included in the certificate per policy. Additional details on CSU certificate programs can be found at: https://graduateschool.colostate.edu/graduate-certificate-programs/.
Application and Admission Fee:
Students are required to apply for the certificate even if they are currently in a degree seeking program. The admission fee is $60. Students must apply through the CSU Graduate Admissions website at https://gradadmissions.colostate.edu/apply/. Rolling admissions apply. Applications will be accepted beginning in Fall 2025.
Eligibility & Enrollment:
Enrollment in the certificate program is limited to students currently enrolled in a CSU Department of Psychology graduate program. Additionally, students must have completed PSY 652 & PSY 653 (or equivalent) with a minimum GPA of 3.0.
Previously completed courses can be retroactively applied toward the certificate requirements.
New Course Offerings:
Along with the certificate program, we have two newly approved courses:
- PSY 752 – An advanced psychometrics course focusing on item response theory.
- PSY 750 – A topical seminar covering special topics in quantitative and qualitative methods used in psychological research (content will rotate and vary).
PSY 600K will continue to be offered on its regular schedule. We aim to offer PSY 750, PSY 752, PSY 753, and PSY 754 on a rotating basis once every two years. However, for a variety of reasons, course availability is not guaranteed, so students should plan to complete these courses when offered.
Substance Use Disorder Identification and Treatment (SUDIT) Certificate
Students in the Counseling Psychology Ph.D. program are eligible to complete a certificate in Substance Use Disorder Identification and Treatment (SUDIT). Students who earn the SUDIT certificate learn the most effective and ethical ways to identify and treat substance use disorders. The SUDIT certificate is beneficial for anyone who plans to work in private practice as they will be certified to effectively treat all substance use disorders, a skill not traditionally taught in most counseling psychology doctoral programs. The SUDIT certificate is also important for anyone who plans to pursue a career as a substance use researcher as this certificate emphasizes one’s expertise in the field.
What Course are Required?
The certificate consists of four courses that can be completed at any point within the 10 years that students are granted to complete their counseling psychology degree.
- Two classes are offered during Fall semesters:
- PSY726: Neuropharmacology
- PSY724: Motivational Interviewing
- Two classes are offered during Spring semesters:
- PSY613: Advanced Addiction Counseling
- PSY710: Advanced Addiction Treatment
Students who are interested in the SUDIT certificate who have already completed one or more of the required courses will be given retroactive credit for these courses after they apply for and are accepted into the certificate track.
